Catholic prayer for writers

We’ve been writing since we first entered school, yet it takes plenty of practice, passion, and inspiration to be a good writer. Writers draw inspiration from personal experiences and the world around them and then convert these ideas into beautifully-written and informative text and literature that people can read, learn from and enjoy.

Being a writer can be demanding, too. There is always the pressure of staying inspired and keeping our creative ideas flowing, keeping up with deadlines, ensuring that our work is high quality and appropriate for target readers, and so much more.

Whenever we feel uninspired and unmotivated to put our ideas into words, this writer’s prayer will help us seek God’s divine inspiration and ask for His wisdom. May He fill our hearts with passion once more so that we may use our talents to help others and glorify His name.

Catholic prayer for writers

Lord of Light and Hope,

I praise You for the beauty of the world that surrounds me and the life I am given. Thank You for the rising sun that wakes me each day and the family members who ceaselessly care for my well-being. You’ve given me great blessings and even greater loved ones, and it is through their eyes that I feel Your depthless love.

Forgive me for letting you down so many times. My only wish is that You will look down upon me with mercy and see the genuine remorse and regret that consumes me. Give me the armor of faith and the sword of truth, so I can stand against the evil surrounding me. Redeem my soul and wash away the guilt of my transgressions.

Thank You for giving me a wonderful way with words, a talent that has granted me many achievements in life. Thank You for filling my mind with exciting ideas and giving me multiple sources of inspiration. Thank You for the abundance of literature and written works in the world, most of which is the Bible that holds stories of truth and guidance for our salvation. I pray that I will continue to use my writing skills to glorify You.

Despite this great gift, however, there are days when I feel drained of my passion for writing. In these times, I often find it hard to think and express myself creatively and uniquely through words. There are days when I feel so demotivated, drained of passion, and completely dissatisfied with my attempts to produce a written work. I know that all these are normal, but I aspire to be a better writer who is disciplined yet also knows when to stop, rest, and reflect before pushing forward.

Lord, I know that I sometimes forget to sit down and recharge in this world of pressure and stress. Whenever I feel burnt out, may You gently remind me that the most beautiful ideas come after reflection. Remind me to rest for a little while, Lord, for this is a journey, not a race.

Only You can awaken my soul and fill my mind with beautiful ideas. May You light the flame of my passion and guide my hands as I string words together and create meaningful works that will teach, inform, entertain, inspire, and help others. Be my ever-guiding light, my source of inspiration and hope.

Amen.

The Word of God

“Have you understood all this?” They answered, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Matthew 13:51-52 NRSVUE

My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.

Psalm 45:1 NRSVUE

I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Psalm 32:8 NRSVUE

Intercessory prayer to Saint Francis de Sales

Saint Francis, faithful and revered,

You loyally served the Lord with all your heart, performing your duty to His people with patience and gentleness.

Thank you for watching over journalists and writers like me as we wield words for greater glory. As the patron saint of writers’ block, you’ve planted seeds of inspiration for troubled writers who found themselves burnt out. They’ve sought your help in reviving their creative spirit and found their minds and hearts renewed.

Pray for me as I try to get through this writer’s block that has been draining my motivation and creativity. Saint Francis, may you give me peace as I sit down for a while and reflect on myself and the world around me. Then, once I have recharged, may you again spark the flame of passion in my heart. Bless the product of the mind and the works of my hands. May my written works be as meaningful as they are beautiful.

Saint Francis, pray for us. Amen.

Further reflection

Dissatisfaction with our work, lack of motivation, lack of inspiration or creative “sparks,” and getting distracted easily are some prominent examples of writer’s block. It can be caused by many things like perfectionism (even on the first draft) or having a stressful environment. When we feel like we’re going through an inconvenient bout of writer’s block and can’t seem to find the passion for writing that we used to have, put everything aside. Clear the mind of all our worries and anxiety, and cast all our fears to the Lord. Talk to Him through this prayer and supplement divine conversation with minor lifestyle changes.

Sometimes, as a writer, getting out of our comfort zones can seem stressful and daunting, especially when we’ve established habits, routines, and systems that helped us overcome life’s hurdles. But when those systems no longer work, it’s time to step out of the box and explore new things. It can be as simple as switching our usual writing space for a scenic outdoor workspace, trying different brainstorming and planning techniques, or immersing ourselves in a new hobby or culture.

Getting out of our comfort zones and learning to trust God throughout the process will open doors of opportunities and encourage our growth not just as writers but as people in general. Most of all, don’t forget to rest every now and then and thank Him for all of life’s little adventures.
