Life feels blessed when we are surrounded by wonderful people who give us strength and support. Somehow, despite the difficulties of life, everything feels okay as long as we feel their presence. Friends are the shoulders we cry on, the people we call late at night when no one else will pick up, the ears who listen without judgment, and the hands who give their love freely. To have such genuine and loyal companions in life is already a valuable blessing from heaven.

However, even though they give us strength, they, too, are vulnerable to grief, hardship, sadness, misfortune, and tragedy. They may be the superheroes of our life, the stars who never fail to brighten even our darkest days, but they also need our help occasionally.

If someone we hold close to our hearts is going through a heavy phase in their life, pray for them through this comforting prayer. Even if we are unsure how to extend a helping hand, this powerful prayer to comfort a friend can help them immensely. Talk to God, pray for their wellbeing and happiness, and offer them our love and care when needed.

Prayer to comfort a friend

Lord God, my Eternal Friend, and Comforter,

Thank You for the gift of good and loyal friends who stayed by my side through the ups and downs. Their presence in my life is one of the greatest blessings I’ve ever received, and I am beyond grateful to meet such excellent and admirable people and call them my friends.

After all that they’ve done for me, my soul aches to see my friend struggling and hurting. I feel their pain like a stake through my heart, and I know I need to be there for them the way they were there for me when I needed them.

Heavenly Father, bless my dearest friends who are going through problems that I don’t know about. Heal them from their sorrow and suffering, and shine Your light upon them. Banish the darkness that plagues them and grant peace and calmness to their troubled hearts. Soothe them in their troubles and give them courage as they face life’s trials.

May I be a vessel of Your love. I pray that You will use me to make Your presence known unto them through our friendship. I may not always be aware of their suffering, but I try my hardest to help them in any way I can. I wish my dear friend nothing but happiness and prosperity. Grant their heart’s desires, O Lord, as long as they are righteous and just. Reward them with blessings far beyond the value of all their sweat and tears.

Eternal Healer, my friend’s back is scarred from carrying heavy burdens. Heal their wounds, which have caused them great pain and suffering. Wipe away their worries, which have troubled them in their sleep. Grant my friend solace in their problems. May You shower them with strength, wisdom, and courage through this difficult time. Amen.

Intercessory prayer to Saint John

Beloved Saint John the Apostle, 

You stood your ground and never deserted him despite the persecution, humiliation, and prejudice that non-believers threw at you. Instead, you bravely and loyally preached the Lord’s Gospel to the nations despite the odds, faithfully following in His footsteps and obediently embracing the noble mission that Jesus assigned you.

May our ever-gracious God reveal to us the mysteries of His plan through you. May He strengthen our friendship and give us opportunities to further root ourselves in faith, wisdom, and love.

The Lord has seen how our friendship started and grew into the beautiful bond it is now, nurtured through shared adventures and meaningful memories. My friend has stayed with me through thick and thin like you stayed by Jesus Christ. They have become my crying shoulder and my source of peace and wisdom. Even in times when I refused to be helped, they were there, and even their presence was enough to bring a little more calmness into my troubled mind.

It breaks my heart now to see the struggles that my friend continues to endure. I do not doubt their strength and the strength of their will, for they have lent it to me when I needed them. But despite their capabilities, I desperately ask for your help in this time of darkness and turmoil. Relieve them from their pain and help them conquer their challenges one step at a time. Please guide me on how I can best help my companion and how to make them feel like they are never alone.

Saint John, pray for the comfort of my friend. Amen. 

Further reflection

Friendship is a two-way connection that runs deep within the soul. When nurtured properly, it is a beautiful bond that can withstand the hardest of life’s storms and remain unbroken no matter the distance between us and our dear friend. Our shared experiences and beautiful moments testify to God’s love and His wonderful plans for both of us. God is making His presence known in our life through our friend’s loyalty and genuine care, love, and support. However, we should never forget that despite their admirable courage, kindness, wisdom, and strength, they aren’t invincible to hardship and exhaustion. Sometimes, they need a little love and a dear friend’s presence too, and giving back all the love we receive is always important.

Even a warm hug, a meaningful conversation, a simple act of service, heartfelt words of encouragement, or a thoughtful gift can go a long way in lifting their spirits since they know they are not facing their challenges alone. Although they have their own paths to take, and we have ours, don’t hold back from making them feel loved and appreciated, even by simply showing up and being there for them, especially during the times when they need us the most. We may never realize it at that moment, but even a simple smile or a few cheerful words can brighten their lives instantly and save them from drowning in despair.
