God is our ultimate healer and protector. He gives us the strength to continue with our lives. And God shares this healing mission with our dedicated doctors and physicians.
To be in the medical field is not an easy thing. It took a lot of painstaking studies, internships, and residency programs for our doctors to finally practice their expertise in the healthcare sector. For this, let us thank God for giving us doctors and physicians who serve as His healing hands’ extensions to this world.
Being a doctor or physician is a major responsibility. That is why we should turn to the Lord and pray for all our doctors and physicians. They offer their talent and lives so that others may live and be healed. May they be constantly renewed by God’s strength and goodness.
Prayer for Doctors
Lord God, all-powerful and everlasting, in You is the fount of wellness and healing. You wonderfully created us in Your very own image and likeness. You have shared with us Your divine life in an ever-deeper way. I praise and thank You for this privilege and gift.
Father, You have graciously shared with me Your healing deeds. Thank You for calling and choosing me to be a doctor. Thank You for the trust You have in me as a doctor. May You be always and everywhere praised for sharing with me such a noble task.
O God, as I continue to practice this profession, grant me a humble heart. May I never grow arrogant before Your holy presence. May I be reminded that I am just Your instrument. You are still the Great Healer. The healing of my patients relies solely on Your will and Your time.
Father, may my daily and constant intention be to be at the service of my neighbors. May I not seek fame or wealth. Rather, may I see You in every patient that I help. May this profession You have entrusted me with be the means of my holiness and goodness.
Please guide me as I go about my daily duties in the hospital and clinic. May You grant me the needed wisdom in every situation and decision that I have to make. May I always rely on Your wisdom and power and not on mine.
I ask You, dear Lord, to accompany me in every task I undertake. May I put my trust and faith in You and Your healing power. May it be Your will that my patients be healed from all their sickness and discomfort.
O God, I pray for my patients. I pray to You for them that their sufferings be a participation in the suffering of Christ the Lord. May You be their constant companion as they go through the path of healing and recovery. Please be with them. Strengthen them and give them hope.
Lord, may I use my profession for the benefit of my neighbors and society in general. By being a doctor, may I contribute to the building up of Your kingdom here on earth. May I be faithful and diligent in this profession. Please continue to guide me in all that I do.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord and healer. Amen.

A Physician Prayer to Saints Cosmas and Damian
Beloved Saints Cosmas and Damian, noble brother-physicians and martyrs of Christ, you sacrificed your lives for the love of God, for the good of mankind, and to complete your martyrdom with an unashamed and devoted confession of your faith. You taught us to always and fearlessly confess our faith in Jesus Christ and to love God above all else and our neighbor as ourselves.
I share with you the gift we received from God: to be His instruments of bringing healing and cure to humanity. I call upon you, glorious martyrs of Jesus Christ, who practiced the healing arts with admirable altruism and selflessness throughout their lives, curing the incurable and treating life-threatening illnesses not so much with the help of skill and medicine but rather by calling upon the most powerful name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Given that you are now in the presence of God in heaven, kindly cast your merciful gaze upon our poor, suffering souls. Hasten your assistance when you see the various diseases—both spiritual and physical—that plague us and those around us. We ask that you help us with all our needs.
Dear Saints Cosmas and Damian, you inspire me with your professionalism. Ignite the fervor of compassion for my patients in my heart. Permit me to serve as a vehicle for sending the healing power of God to everyone who is ill. May I be of assistance to them while they recover from physical, mental, and spiritual diseases. Please offer your prayers for my medical colleagues and me. Please give us the strength to carry out these tasks with caution, bravery, and calmness.
Beloved physician-martyrs, only God truly understands who my patients are. He is the only one who is aware of their medical conditions and how to treat them. Please ask God to help us with each of our tasks. Please pray that God will give my patients the strength and courage they need. May the unfathomable tranquility of God guard the hearts and minds of our sufferers. Reassure them that God is protecting and caring for them and that He will be at their side as they heal.
Saints Cosmas and Damian, pray for us. Amen.
Further reflection
One of the most honorable careers one may take is that of a doctor. Whether it’s treating a regular cold or saving our lives when serious sickness or injury occurs, doctors are there to assist us. Christ is the only true Healer we have, and He uses medical professionals to assist us in recovering our health here on Earth.
It brings so much encouragement when we offer a prayer for a doctor or a physician. As they continue to provide us with professional and medical help, may we not forget to thank and appreciate them and to entrust them and their task to the Lord.
For all our doctors, we thank the Lord for sending them to us as His instruments for healing and recovery from sicknesses. We pray for them and their unending commitment to the dignity and sacredness of the person and human life. May they continue to glorify God through their selfless service to us, especially the sick.
