Prayer for eye healing

Our eyesight affects most of our actions. In a physiological sense, our body reacts to what we see. Seeing something beautiful attracts us and makes our bodies move toward it. While seeing something dangerous, we distance ourselves as far as possible. Thus, maintaining our eye health is as important as our survival and well-being, for we use it every day. Healthy vision can contribute to greater mobility, improved learning, and a better quality of life.

Although not everyone is gifted with perfect eyesight, others experience blurred vision, short-sightedness, long-sightedness, or even blindness. We might also experience instances of eye strain which affects our eyes’ health. We make this prayer for vision. We pray for the health of our eyes. We beg for the healing of our eyes. May God’s healing grace remove the disease or blindness which covers our eyes. May we continue to obtain the care and help that we need toward full recovery. May we regain our vision in God’s perfect time and eventually see God’s mercy and goodness in our lives. 

Prayer for vision

O God, the all-powerful Father,

I pray for the healing of my eyes. Allow Your healing grace to cleanse the impurities of my eyes. All-knowing and ever-present God help me realize and know why I am experiencing such illness. May Your light penetrate through the barriers of my eyes so that I may perceive Your mercy and love for me. In regaining my vision, I hope to become Your faithful witness to Your unfailing providence in my life.

I confess, dear Father, that I have been careless in taking care of my eye health. I may have spent countless hours before the glaring light of my phone or other devices. I may have put no importance on having my eyes checked periodically. There might have been sleepless nights when my eyes needed to rest. I may not have been able to take care of my overall health, which led to the deterioration of my eyes’ health.

I extend my prayers to those who are clinically blind and those who need immediate care. Let Your gentle hand touch their eyes so that they may regain their eyesight. Help them to see the beauty of Your creation. Help them to see Your goodness, made known through the people around them. Help them to see You in the face of Jesus Christ, Your only begotten Son. In healing them from their sickness and blindness, may they see everything with the eyes of faith.

May my prayers ascend like incense before Your heavenly altars, o all-powerful Father in heaven.

O God, may You grant healing for my eyes. Remove the scales of blindness that I may see Your unfailing goodness and bountiful mercy. Amen.

St Lucy prayer for eyes

Dear Saint Lucy, a martyr for the faith, I seek your powerful intercession for my eye health. Your prayers for the ailing health of your mother were a testimony of your great faith and confidence in God’s healing grace. Kindly lend an ear to my prayer for my eye health and for those who need it. Whisper to God my intentions for the quick recovery of those who underwent eye surgery and who are taking medications.

O, Saint Lucy, you remained faithful to God amidst persecution and kept your vision toward heaven filled with its merits and God’s grace. At a young age, you dedicated yourself and your heart to God even when you were forced to marry a young nobleman. Your eyes were always set on God, Him alone. Kindly grant me also a trusting and childlike faith like yours. May I always set my eyes on God and the heavenly merits which He bestows on His faithful ones. Clear any impurities and drive away any distractions which would lead me astray from following God’s plan. May I remain immovable and strong amidst blazing trials and fiery temptations which may come into my life. Kindly grant me the grace to constantly gaze on God for help and strength.

Saint Lucy, I also bring to you those who are blind and are suffering from eye diseases. I commend to you the blind people whom I know and their caretakers. Provide them with the hope and perseverance to live their lives to the fullest. May the cross which they constantly bear lead not their hearts away from God but closer to His providential hand. May my petition, this prayer for eye health, aid their immediate need and for their immediate recovery.

Saint Lucy, patron of eye conditions and blindness, pray for us.

Further reflection

Our eyes are the windows to our bodies. The light that passes through our eyes guides the actions of our bodies. How we react to our environment is always based on what we see before us. The images retained in our minds are those which we choose to see. Our sense of sight is truly significant to our everyday living. We should always take care of our eye health and be careful not to strain it too much. Lack of proper care may lead to deterioration of one’s vision and could ultimately lead to sight difficulties.

Blindness is the most common eye condition that the people in the bible experienced. In the Bible, this was usually caused by sin as punishment from God. The men of Sodom (Genesis 19:5-9) were blinded when they tried to trespass on Lot’s house. The Assyrians in the time of prophet Elisha (2 Kings 6:13-18) were struck with blindness through the prophet’s miraculous intercession. And Saul’s, who later on became the Apostle Paul, journey on the Damascus road (Acts of the Apostles 9:3-9) led to his conversion and became the great apostle to the Gentiles.

Blindness is not only used to describe physical impairment of one’s vision. We can also experience a spiritual blindness, which is caused by sin or not following God’s ordinances. In the Bible, even when God would cast blindness on the sinner, He would also guide them toward recovery and change. From being blind to the false promises of temptations, God’s light casts away its lies and deception. From being covered by the multitude of the riches of the world, God’s divine providence put them all to shame. From being clouded by the illusion of one’s pride, God’s love embraces our true selves and continues to see who we are.

May this prayer for eye healing and our Saint Lucy prayer for the gift of vision not only intercede for our eyes’ physical health and well-being but also help us open our eyes of faith. May we always see Christ in the people we meet. May we set our eyes toward heaven with all its merits and graces.
