The elderly have always been an important part of every aspect of society. Their lives give witness to the stories of the past. The wisdom and counsel that they impart to us are lessons from their past trials and triumphs. Their generosity and love reflect how God’s graciousness and love have kept them throughout their lifetime. Our grandmothers may have played a big role in our lives. Their motherly care and affection towards us, their grandchildren, emanates God’s motherly love and care for the whole world.
We remember our grandmothers in this prayer for them. We recall how they influenced our minds with their profound wisdom. We thank them for their unending generosity in providing for our needs. We bring them to God in thanksgiving for making them part of our lives. If there are any withstanding rifts or difficulties in our relationship with them, we continue to offer our prayers for them hoping that God would fill the gap and bring us closer again through His love.
Prayer for grandma
God, our heavenly Father,
Lend an ear to my prayer for my grandma. Her healthy old age shows Your unfailing providence. Her instinct and intuition reflect Your immense wisdom. Her unbounded generosity and maternal care exude Your love for Your faithful one. Kindly look upon my grandmother and continue to shower her with Your bountiful graces. She has become an inspiration for me to value my life and my relationship with the people around me. Her kind smile warms my heart. Her delicious meals fill my belly. Her affectionate care comforts my being. You have blessed me with a grandmother deserving the flowing riches of heaven.
Our heavenly Father, I also admit the shortcomings I have had with my grandmother. Weak as I am, I recall the instances when anger prevailed over understanding when selfishness overcame generosity; and when I chose indifference over love. These weaknesses of mine may have caused a rift in our relationship. In Your divine mercy, may You fill the divide between us. Allow Your Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds so that we may reach mutual understanding and respect. Let the blood of Your Son trickle into our wounded hearts to heal and regain what was lost. I humbly pray as Your lowly servant, seeking Your forgiveness for the sins against my grandmother.
I do remember not only my own grandma through this prayer but also all the other grandmothers I know personally and those whom I have encountered in my lifetime. I bring to You the names and faces of the various grandmothers I met in church, in supermarkets, in hospitals, and even in retirement homes. I pray for grandmothers who walk different paths in life. Those grandmothers who continuously work and provide for their children and grandchildren, may You grant them strength and hope. Those grandmothers who are lonely and abandoned, may You accompany them with Your presence through the sacraments and with their caregivers and family. And those grandmothers who are sick and dying, lay Your hand upon them and grant them a peaceful death.
Let my prayer for grandmothers reach to You like streams of water flowing across Your heavenly courts,
Amen.

The Word of God
“But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their parents.
Proverbs 17:6 NRSVUE
Prayer to Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, for grandmothers.
Venerable Saint Anne, the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus, listen to my prayer for my grandmother. Your attentive care and pious direction for your daughter, Mary, prepared her to become the mother of Jesus, our Lord. May my grandmother obtain the same fervor and love as yours for her children and grandchildren. Strengthen her limbs so that she may continue to care for and to look out for her grandchildren. Fill her heart with deep joy as she smiles unreservedly while spending quality time with her family. Nourish her faith in God as she approaches her twilight years toward His loving embrace.
O Saint Anne, you have shown us that the best practice of serving your children is through building a healthy family. You have become Mary’s primary and shining example of becoming a loving mother. Through your faithful and patient instruction, Mary has become a perfect vessel to bear the Son of God, who would redeem the whole of humanity of their sins. God showed you favor when you bore Mary in your womb. God saw how difficult it was to be barren; thus He has blessed and called you, Saint Anne, to a greater mission in participating in God’s divine plan.
May your virtues and grace emanate from my grandmother. May you help her to encourage her grandchildren to pursue what is good and pleasing before God. Let my grandmother’s words of encouragement be a source of inspiration in facing the challenges of life. Make her a good grandmother to her grandchildren. May she enjoy a good and happy life with her family and her grandchildren. May my prayer for grandma bring her closer to God, mature in faith, and in virtues.
Saint Anne, the mother of Mary and patron of grandmothers, pray for us.
Amen.
Further reflection
Due honor and respect should be given to our grandmothers. They may seem weak and fragile with old age, but their life is a testament to their courageous and formidable faith in this journey called life. They have experienced the ups and downs of their tumultuous life. Their thoughts may speak of wisdom only obtained through lived experience. The wrinkles on their faces are the scars they carry surpassing the painful and joyous moments in life. Our grandmothers lived decades before us, and it is only fitting that we look after and listen to them for advice, encouragement, and inspiration. Honoring them would be the same as honoring God, who is the great Father of the whole humanity.
May we always continue to pray for our grandmothers. Let the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy resound in our prayers for them: to become a lighthouse of piety and devotion to God. Allow the examples of the saints, like Saint Anne, to inspire them to become a loving and devout grandmother. Let Saint Anne be our companion in praying for them. Serving and loving one’s children and grandchildren is the best way to build a family and invest in forming a loving and God-fearing generation. Our grandmother’s influence is a great impact and a strong legacy in building our identity and in our communal and political life.
