We are surrounded by laws and regulations. The society we live in is a society of laws. Laws exist to maintain peace and order, prohibit particular actions, and ensure justice for all citizens.
Lawyers are specially and rigorously trained for the task of interpreting the laws, defending their clients, and ensuring that justice is not compromised. They are our advocates and advisers. They perform a very crucial role in the promotion and maintenance of social order.
This is why it is important for lawyers to be always enlightened by wisdom, fairness, and truth. These prayers can be said by lawyers and legal practitioners to seek God’s guidance in their noble tasks. May these prayers be their daily inspiration as they prepare and accomplish their sworn duty as advocates of justice and truth.
A lawyers prayer
Almighty God, the Fount of Truth and Supreme Law, we give You thanks and praise for the gift of justice, peace, and truth. Through Your Son, our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ, Your Kingdom was inaugurated here on earth. We desire that Your Kingdom, marked by justice, truth, peace, and love, be with us for all times.
Thank You, Father, for granting me the opportunity to serve You and Your people as a lawyer. Thank You for journeying with me in my rigorous studies and training. Thank You for calling and choosing me as a promoter of social order, fairness, and justice.
God, grant me wisdom and impartiality as I study and review the cases of my clients. Help me through Your divine wisdom to be critical of very important details that may help in arriving at a fair and righteous judgment. May I always be a part of a justice system that is founded on fair procedures.
May I always be concerned with my client’s best interests. May I exercise this privilege You have given me with nobility, dignity, and truthfulness. May I not be allured by money or fame, but please help me to always think of justice and truth as my only intentions.
Just and merciful God, grant me the grace to dedicate my life to the understanding of the law. May I always apply it to the cases I now have and will soon handle. Let every word I say speak the truth. Let all my actions serve You and the law. Enable me through Your grace to counsel my clients with prudence and righteousness.
May Your Spirit be my guide and counsel. Never let me compromise the truth but uphold it at all times. Grant me Your wisdom that in all my decisions and actions, I may be wise and firm. Through my profession, may I be Your cooperator in the building up of Your Kingdom on earth.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives with You and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

The Word of God
He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8 NRSVUE
A lawyers prayer to Saint Thomas More
Saint Thomas More, patron saint of lawyers, who almighty God, Absolute Truth, and Ultimate Law, granted you the privilege and responsibility to become an advocate of justice and truth. I come to you to ask for your prayers and intercession.
Beloved Saint Thomas More, you freely chose execution rather than transgressing the commandments of God. Your words continue to inspire and guide me: “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first”. May I always be motivated to perform my duties and responsibilities with God as my primary encouragement and master.
Pray to God for me that my every word speaks the truth and only the truth. May each of my actions be directed to serve the law and God’s people. May I become a competent counselor to my clients. May I always be a worthy officer of the court. And like you, may I also become a loyal servant of God’s justice.
Saint Thomas More intercede with God on my behalf that I may be faithful to His will. Never let me compromise the truth, but rather defend it all the more. May each day of my life in this profession bring me closer to the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of righteousness, justice, and love.
Pray to God for me, O Saint Thomas More, that I may only seek the holy will of God in all my endeavors and dealings. May He grant me wisdom, prudence, and fortitude in all my actions and decisions. May God’s law, written in the hearts of all, prevail in all that we do.
Saint Thomas More, God’s faithful servant, pray for me. Amen.
Further reflection
As officers of the law, lawyers must realize their solemn duty and responsibility to always uphold the rule of law. This can only begin and come from within. They must have the right mindset and attitude as they fulfill their profession.
The role of the lawyers is a multifaceted one. They are counselors, advocates, and defenders. As such, they should be of service to others, driven by fairness and truth. They must use their skills and knowledge of the law to ensure that justice will prevail. Their profession should be an assurance that the best possible outcome for their clients will be fulfilled. The lawyer is and will always be at the service of the people through the law.
The role of lawyers is not so simple. They do not just walk into a courtroom, debate and ask, and walk out as winners in an argument. They spend hours and days researching and studying. They draft strategies and anticipate possible scenarios. But at the end of the day, lawyers must be servants of justice and order.
With such great responsibility, let us include our lawyers in our prayers. May they be faithful to their sworn duty. May they embody the Gospel of Christ, which is rooted in justice, love, and compassion. May they be rewarded by God, the Sovereign Judge of all, through their dedication and commitment to serving society.
