Prayers for creation and nature

Humans have always been fascinated by and grateful for the beauty and wonder of creation. The natural world provides a wealth of emotional, spiritual, physical, artistic, and creative values that tremendously benefit individuals. Nature is a crucial foundation for a person’s earthly life in this world in many ways.

Our survival and the well-being of our planet depend on us taking care of nature and creation. Humans depend on the natural systems and resources of the planet to give us food, drink, and shelter. Yet, we frequently take these resources for granted, overuse them, and disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems.

A deeper love for the natural world and the Creator who created it can be developed through a short prayer for nature. As we commit to becoming responsible stewards of nature, prayers and petitions can be made so that grace and dedication will fill each of us. We can express our thankfulness for the wealth of resources and natural beauty in our world and ask for direction on how to use them wisely and sustainably. We can be more conscientious of our decisions and their effects on the environment by understanding the interdependence of all life forms and the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Prayer for creation and environment

Father, Creator of all, we praise and thank You for the wonders of Your mighty hand. You have made a world full of wonder, beauty, and abundance, from the tiniest insects to the highest mountains. We are grateful for the diversity of life on earth, the complexity of each ecosystem, and the seamless harmony that exists between everything. We are thankful for the cycles of life and death that constantly remind us of the renewal of Your creation.

Thank You for entrusting us with the care of Your creation and for allowing us the opportunity to work toward a more just and sustainable world. May we always remember that it is our duty to preserve and value Your creation. May we constantly be grateful for the bounty of Your creation and perpetually strive to live in peace with everything around us.

Lord, the difficulties that our planet is experiencing can easily make one feel overwhelmed and helpless in the face of such widespread devastation. But I know You have charged us with caring for and safeguarding Your creation. I pray for the strength and wisdom to execute this sacred duty. Please remind me to think about how my actions affect the world around me. Please show me how to use resources responsibly, respect the natural cycles of life, and live in harmony with the environment.

Please direct me as I work to promote environmental justice and defend disadvantaged communities and ecosystems. Please help me to recognize how all life is interconnected and to strive for a world where everyone can prosper. May I be a light for hope as I move through this world, illuminating the way to a more equal and sustainable future. I pray that everything I do will show how much I love You and all of Your creation.

We ask all these through Your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

The Word of God

The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.

Psalm 19:1-2 NRSVUE

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are humans that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet.

Psalm 8:3-4, 6 NRSVUE

Prayer to Saint Francis of Assisi for the environment

Dear Saint Francis of Assisi, faithful servant of God, we invoke your powerful intercession as we pray for our planet. As the patron saint of animals and the environment, we pray to you for wisdom and the preservation of creation. We beg your help in improving our stewardship of the planet. Please help us to respect nature’s fragile equilibrium and to recognize the beauty and wonder of all creation.

We offer prayers for people impacted by environmental harm and those putting forth great effort to save and conserve our natural resources. We ask that you help us become more sensitive to the effects our activities have on the environment around us and to live more simply and sustainably.

You, who cherished all living things and recognized the beauty and wonder of all creation, inspire us to live up to your example. Teach us to love all life, from the tiniest ant to the greatest elephant, from the smallest blade of grass to the mightiest tree. Help us to live with humility, compassion, and love.

Saint Francis of Assisi, may we follow your example and be inspired by your love for all of God’s creation. Please help us to see the interdependence of all things and to strive for a world in which every living thing is valued and appreciated.

Saint Francis of Assisi, pray for us. Amen.

Further reflection

The environment has already felt the effects of our actions significantly. A few examples of how our contempt for nature has negatively impacted the environment include climate change, deforestation, pollution, and the loss of species. These challenges affect the quality of life for all living things, including humans. These are not merely environmental problems but also social and economic ones.

Taking care of nature also entails respecting every living thing’s inherent worth and right to exist. Therefore, we must change our way of thinking from one that puts human needs and wants above all else to one that recognizes the interdependence of all life forms and strives for the common good.

The foundation of caring for the environment is love. Everyone and everything that God wills and values should experience the virtue of divine love. Love of nature is fundamentally based on God’s benevolence, knowledge, and love, which are reflected in every living thing. Given that nature is a creation of God, it deserves our affection as well.

We must understand that we are not outside nature but rather a part of it. The condition of the earth and our well-being are closely related. We must thus protect the environment and develop sustainable methods to guarantee the long-term existence of both human and non-human life. Taking care of creation is a way to honor and give glory, praise, and blessing to the Creator—the first One who has so abundantly blessed humanity.
