Prayer for healing lungs

Breathing is a sign of the life in our bodies. It clearly distinguishes a living being from inanimate objects. We rely on our respiratory system to work in delivering oxygen throughout the body to maintain its vital functions. A healthy and functioning respiratory system is most important to a healthy and active body. Conscious breathing also allows us to center ourselves in prayer. We should strive to maintain the health of our lungs, for it is vital to our physical health and spiritual nourishment.

Let us now raise our eyes and lift our hearts to God as we offer this prayer for lung healing. We beg before Him to continuously grace us with His healing hand in having healthy and functioning lungs. May He breathe in us the life-giving Spirit, which animated us when we were formed from the earth. Let us also offer our intention for those in need as we make this prayer for difficulty breathing. We keep in mind the people we know who are experiencing problems breathing. May God place His healing hand over them.

Prayer for lung healing

Dear Father, the giver of life,

I come before You, to seek Your grace for the healing of my lungs. May You ease the pain and difficulty that I am experiencing in breathing. Clear any congestion and remove any block which hinders the flow of oxygen within my body. Breath in me, Your life-giving Spirit, to revitalize my struggling and weak lungs. I pray for the quick recovery of my lung health so that I may continue to be an instrument of Your life-giving care and love. Defend me from every hazard which may endanger my healthy lungs. Protect me from any respiratory illnesses as I continue to do Your good work here on earth.

In my weakness, I confess before You the abuses I may have done which compromised the health of my lungs. I recall the times when I would indulge myself in smoking a cigarette. Though it may be an immediate fix to calm myself, its adverse effects on my health and on my lungs should keep me from it. In smoking, not only do I harm myself, but I also negatively affect those who are around me through the smoke which I exhale. There were also times that I led an unhealthy lifestyle which might have jeopardized the overall health of my lungs.    

Let my prayers for lung healing extend to those who are affected by respiratory diseases, to those who are healing after surgery, and to those who are experiencing difficulty breathing at this moment. May we always rely on and have faith in Your providential care and protection for the sick and the needy. I pray that they may experience Your healing grace and recover in Your time. Breathe in us, Your living spirit, that we may be healed.

Allow my prayers to come before You, Father, who continuously sustains and breathes life in us.

Prayer to Saint Bernardine of Siena for lung healing

O Saint Bernardine of Siena, patron for those who seek recovery from respiratory illnesses, I seek your intercession for the healing of my lungs. Through your miraculous intercession and prayer for the sick and the needy, God healed them of their ailments. I come before you now to heal me from my infirmities. May you heal and strengthen my weak lungs. May you channel God’s healing grace through the airways of my body so that I may breathe easily, without any pain or difficulty.

By the example of your shining faith in God, may I come to reflect and realize what God might be telling me through the difficulty that I am currently experiencing. Help me to remove any blockages which restrict the flow of God’s grace in my life. As I breathe in God’s life-giving Spirit, may it cleanse my body from any impurities. May it invigorate me as I continue to be God’s instrument on earth. Inspire me to surrender myself to the will of the Divine Spirit in faithfully living as a true example of the Christian life. In breathing in the graces of God, I may exhale his loving mercy and compassion to the needy.

Dear Saint Bernardine of Siena, I would like to extend my prayer for healing lungs to those in need. I bring to you the names and faces of the people who are suffering from respiratory diseases. With my intention, may you also hear and grant their prayerful intention for their health. Grant strength also to those who take care of them. Surround them with your protection so that they may not contract any undesirable diseases. Kindly guard and keep them safe always.

Further reflection

God breathed life into our nostrils when we were formed out of clay. God’s life-giving spirit provided warmth to our cold and lifeless bodies. His Spirit filled our lungs with vigor and strength to become His life-giving instruments on earth. His spirit gave life not only to us but also to the whole of creation as it hovered throughout the face of the earth. Thus, God’s Spirit dwells within us and within every living being.

As vessels or temples of God’s living spirit, it is only suitable to take care of our bodies and the rest of creation as well. Life is a gift given by God, and we should take care of and nourish it. For us to avoid any complications with our health, especially with our lungs, we should strive to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Providing our lungs with enough exercise leads to better and healthier lungs and, more importantly, exudes thanksgiving for the life given to us. We should absolutely avoid smoking in any form or medium it may present. Intaking harmful chemicals and substances will greatly endanger our health, for their use is not meant for our body’s sake. We can also include in our prayer for difficulty breathing those who are trying to quit smoking. We continue to assist them in their journey toward freedom and a better quality of life.

May we always keep in mind that life is a gift. Health is a wealth that we should give much care and attention to. Truly, we only live once, but life can be more meaningful when lived fully and offered to God. May this prayer be our stepping stone in developing our faith and relationship with God our Father, our brother Jesus Christ, and with the life-giving Holy Spirit.
