Prayer for my parents

The Lord God has commanded us to honor our parents. As children who revere the word of God, we must obediently fulfill this order from God. Even though our parents may not have always understood us and been there for us, we still owe it to them to honor them.

One of the simplest and most heartfelt ways to show our parents how much we care is to say a prayer for them. A sincere prayer welcomes God’s all-powerful presence into one’s life. It also strengthens our relationship with God, our parents, and ourselves.

Catholic prayer for parents

Almighty and ever-living God, You have given us the commandment to love and honor our mothers and fathers. I come to You today to pray for them. All good things come from You, Lord God. You are the source of both riches and blessings. I am grateful to You for Your blessings to my parents. I give You endless thanks that You are the reason for all of our family’s blessings. I ask for Your protection for my parents.

Please grant my parents Your peace, for You are our Lord and Savior in our humble dwelling. I am aware that there are many problems and difficulties in the world. As they work hard every day to provide for us, may You grant them peace, courage, inspiration, and stability.

I give You thanks for all the ways You molded my childhood life through my parents. My parents taught me how to trust You and gave me helpful advice. Even though my parents were not perfect, I know they wanted to shape me into a decent person, and I am very glad because I have them as my inspiration to follow Christ Jesus.

Father, You are love, and love comes from You. I pray for Your love and unity for my parents. Please renew their love for one another and let it shine out on us, their children. Give them a heart of forgiveness, and let Your love cover them always. No matter what obstacle they may face, please grant them the fortitude to face it together and conquer it so that they can live together and serve Your purpose.

It is Your will that my parents live and flourish in good health; therefore, please grant them that. Bless my parents with excellent health and mental clarity, and provide them with a life of comfort, tranquility, and love. As they grow old together, kindly replenish their strength and permit them to live in accordance with Your intentions and goals. Always keep them safe from harm. Protect their bodies from sickness and disease. Please ensure that my parents are protected from those who wish them harm. Help them walk the path that will keep them near to You. Please keep them safe and healthy.

Lord, I am aware that You gave them to me as a gift. They are dedicated individuals that genuinely care about me. They constantly try to instill moral values in me, and I appreciate that You have given them the courage to carry on even when things are difficult. Lord God, I am aware of the numerous sacrifices they have made for me. Please be with them always and keep them forever in Your mercy and grace.

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Almighty and eternal God, You have given us the commandment to honor our parents. In Your mercy, hear my prayer for my parents. Always keep them well physically and mentally. Bless their labors and take care of them continually. Grant that, by Your grace, I may always be their strength and consolation; and that, after our time together on earth, we may share the delight of worshiping You together for all eternity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Word of God

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

Ephesians 6:1-3 NRSVUE

Prayer to Saints Louis and Zelie Martin for my parents

Saints Louis and Zelie Martin, loving and devout parents of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and her holy sisters, I thank God for giving you to us as models of holiness and faithfulness in family life. By your holy lives, you have inspired your daughters to love God and serve Him. On behalf of my parents, I stand before you now to pray. Do not forget about them. Please pray for their happiness and health. Inspire them to love one another.

Saints Louis and Zelie help my parents to live as holy and faithful examples. May they continue to teach me values and precious life lessons from their vast experiences. We are grateful to God for them for being good examples to other people and to us as well. By their words and deeds, may we be continuously inspired by my parents.

Please help my parents to remember their love for each other. Encourage them to reflect on the wonderful memories they have created together. Please help my parents to remember the happy times together so that they can draw strength from those memories during difficult times.

Pray for them that God may continue to grant them patience and understanding. May they be compassionate to one another. May they listen to each other. Bless them and their works. May they cheer each other and acknowledge the triumphs they have achieved together.

Beloved Saints Louis and Zelie, please keep my parents from harm. Protect them from diseases of the body and mind. If ever they get sick, please pray for their complete and speedy recovery. Intercede on their behalf that God may bless them with perseverance in times of adversity. Grant them peace to ease their worry. Grant them love, to battle hatred and indifference.

Saints Louis and Zelie Martin, faithful and loving parents, pray for us. Amen.

Further reflection

The Lord God has given us the commandment to love and honor our parents. This opens up wider and deeper ways in our hearts to honor God as we respect our parents. To love and honor our parents is about loving and honoring God. God promises a life of joy and security to those who respect their parents.

However, the promise made here does not imply that honoring our parents will automatically make our lives on earth or even our relationships with them better or simpler. It demonstrates that we are children of God if we honor them, especially when it is difficult or even uncomfortable.

As practical ways to show them our love and respect, let us be thankful for our parents and show them our gratitude. Spend time with them. Communicate with them and treat them with respect. Forgive them for whatever they might have done or failed to do. Pray for them and with them.
