The community we belong to comprises people from different backgrounds and unique life experiences. They may have a set of beliefs that are entirely different from ours or perhaps personalities that we may dislike. While we’re in no way obligated to be friends with all our neighbors, God taught us to learn to respect and love them despite our differences. Unfortunately, some neighbors have long histories of conflict and misunderstanding, usually perpetuated by gossip, lies, and pettiness.
Offering this prayer for peace with neighbors is an excellent way to ask the Lord to fill hearts with love and mend broken relationships among families and community members. Through a heart-to-heart conversation with the Lord, may old grudges be erased and peace fill our neighborhood.
Prayer for focus and concentration
Our Peaceful King,
We stand before You as individual hearts united under Your holy banner. You’ve seen the growth of our humble community from its founding date to the present. You’ve nurtured several generations of residents in our neighborhood. So great is your faithfulness, we ceaselessly praise Your benevolence and kindness towards Your people.
Forgive us for the hatred and chaos that has somehow seeped into the cracks of our relationships as a neighborhood and community. Forgive us for letting bad feelings manipulate us into creating rifts between us and destroying our peace, harmony, and unity. I ask for pardon for my sins, O Merciful Lord, for the times when I uttered ill words against my brethren or judged them unfairly. Forgive me for sometimes letting the rifts grow instead of reaching out and working together to mend the misunderstandings that have driven me and some of my neighbors apart.
Thank You for Your provision throughout the years. Our neighborhood has seen abundance, famine; joy, tragedy; peace, and chaos. Yet despite the ups and downs of life, I am beyond grateful that we are still here today, alive and well, thanks to Your sufficient grace that sustains us and keeps us safe from harm’s way.
Teach me to love our neighbors just as I love myself. Soften my heart and fill my mind with understanding as I learn to forgive those who wronged me. Let no rage, vengeance, or bitterness take hold of my heart. Lord God, help me let go of the grudges I hold against my neighbors. May I no longer be burdened by negative thoughts against my brethren and embrace kindness instead. May I radiate love and compassion to other members of my community.
May we use our hands not to hurt each other but to work hand-in-hand to build a better community for all of us, one that is based on togetherness and equal opportunity. May we never use our mouths to speak profanities, gossip, or lies about each other but to sing praises to Your name and offer kind words to our neighbors. May the blessings we receive not be kept for selfishness or greed but shared, especially with those in need. Teach us to love each other, work together, and be generous, kind, and understanding, for we know that in Your eyes, genuinely loving our neighbors is to glorify Your name in heaven.
Amen.

The Word of God
You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand idly by when the blood[a] of your neighbor is at stake: I am the Lord. “You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12 NRSVUE
These are the things that you shall do: speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace.

Intercessory prayer to Saint Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis, kind and peaceful,
For centuries, you’ve been an icon of peace in times of conflict and misunderstanding. So I offer you this prayer to love neighbors, hoping that you will fill my heart with kindness and compassion for the people around me. I may not know what goes on behind closed doors in each household, but I pray my heart will be filled with compassion for everyone in my community because we are all fighting our own battles each day.
Saint Francis, I know that misunderstandings, conflict, and prejudice often plague our neighborhood. We quickly judge others and spread lies just to feel good about ourselves. We are sometimes even overcome with greed, always competing to be the most prosperous or successful instead of offering what we have to those who need our help.
May the good God above forgive me for my negative thoughts and the love I’ve denied my neighbors. Soften my heart and inspire me to mend my broken relationships. Take away what pride, bitterness, and greed I have and replace them with empathy, responsibility, and care. May we build each other up and support each other in times of hardship. May we rejoice together in seasons of celebration and happiness.
Praise God for the good neighbors around me who are always willing to lend an extra hand and share what they have. Their kindness and generosity have touched my life in the most beautiful ways, and through them, I am reminded once more that God is watching and He is extending His love for me through them. May He use me, too, as an instrument to help my neighbors feel loved. I look forward to more opportunities to help them in any way I can, for there is fulfillment in offering oneself at the service of one’s community.
May God fill our hearts with a sense of togetherness so that we may treat each other not just as neighbors but as a family, for we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. After all, peace can only reign supreme if love is plentiful and negativity is scarce.
Saint Francis, pray for us. Amen.
Further reflection
Can we recall a time when our neighbors helped us with something or shared their blessings with us? Whether they shared a dish from their Christmas dinner or helped us when we first moved in, we’re truly blessed if we have neighbors who stick with us through thick and thin. Although gossip, misunderstandings, and jealousy can sometimes cause rifts in our relationship with the people in our neighborhood, we always seek to bring peace and mend relationships. May this prayer for a peaceful community unite us with our neighbors and bring a sense of togetherness and belonging.
I love you Lord Jesus with all my heart soul and strength, thank you Lord for all you have done in my life ; please have your will done!

For a good neighbor
Heavenly Father, please help our little road of people to all be able to get along and love one another. There are a few people that just seem to want turmoil continuously & that is not what we want at all. We want for us to all get along, want the best for one another, love one another, not speak ill of each other, not to wish for bad things to happen to the other people, to not think negatively of each other, to not lie to try to get others into trouble or to cause problems for them. Please Dear Lord, we really need you on our road. Having You on this road & in everyone’s hearts would make this the best place to live ever. Amen.
